TURF REFRESH CO. GUIDE
Does Flat Artificial Turf Need Grooming or More Infill?
Published 2026-10-17
How to tell whether matted turf needs power brooming, additional infill, repair, or a combination.
Start by identifying why the turf is flat
Fibers can mat from foot traffic, pets, furniture, vehicles, compacted debris, low infill, or age. The pattern matters. A narrow path through a gate suggests traffic; broad flattening may point to general use or insufficient fiber support.
When grooming may be enough
If fibers are healthy and the existing infill remains adequate, professional power brooming can lift the blade direction and improve the appearance. Cleaning after grooming removes residue and gives the prepared turf a more even finish.
When more infill may help
Turf that looks thin between fibers, shifts underfoot, or falls flat again quickly may have low or uneven infill. Silica sand, WonderFill, or zeolite may be appropriate depending on the turf system, pet use, odor concerns, and budget.
When the problem may be a repair
Wrinkles, loose sections, separated seams, lifted edges, sinking areas, and drainage-related low spots are not solved by grooming or infill alone. Those conditions should be inspected and quoted separately.
Use a condition-based recommendation
The most useful visit combines cleaning with an evaluation of fibers, infill, seams, edges, base, and drainage. That makes it possible to separate cosmetic matting from a support or installation problem.
